A call for sacrifice

Today is the feast of St. Philip and St. James the Apostles. We see in today’s passage, how James and his brother John left their boat and their father and followed Jesus. The Christian call is a call for sacrifice. If you must serve God acceptably, you must first offer yourself to Him as a sacrifice and be ready to surrender everything He requires of you. If you are not ready to give your all for your Christian faith, then your Christianity is questionable. A faith not worth dying for is not worth living for. On the other hand, we know that Philip set out to find others immediately after he was found by Jesus, beginning with Nathaniel (John 1:43-49). We were saved to become instruments of salvation to others. That was the only assignment our Lord Jesus Christ left us with before He ascended, (Mat. 28:18-20). Another very important virtue to learn from Philip is his unpretentious nature. When others kept quiet pretending that they understood Jesus, it was Philip that opened up and made Jesus know that they did not understand (John 14:8). We must learn to open up on our areas of weaknesses and ignorance in order to learn and grow.
