This little nugget is tucked away in the middle of a listing of the men who had volunteered to serve David and who supported his anointing as king over all Israel. In our text, we were told that the men of Issachar ‘understood the times and knew what was expected of Israel. This statement proves two essential components of effective decision making: awareness and decisiveness. Like men of issachar, we need to understand the times and be well aware of the cultural climate in which we cohabit, so that we may become transformers rather than conformers. The bible in (Proverbs 19:20) encouraged us to listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end be counted as a wise person. They also stress the need to submit our plans and desires to Lord, because when we plan without God, we plan to fail. To humans belongs the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue (Prov.16:1). To what degree do you seek counsel of others in making some decisions? Seeking spiritual counsel could help us avert terrible mistakes we might make in life. Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans (prov.16:13).
